Politician veer from crisis to crisis, rarely garnering support (or the courage) to address long standing, festering issues before they spiral out of control.

Procrastination and lack of knowledge is all too human. As individuals, when we fail to repair a leaky roof or save enough for retirement, the damage is localized. But on the national stage, with all the resources available to the most powerful nation on Earth, surely, we can get ahead of problems before makeshift solutions are compelled upon us by foreseeable events.

While not all of the items on this list must be solved via a Constitutional Amendment, we begin by casting a broad net, then consult our We Amend community to narrow the field and debate which challenges rise to the level of an amendment.

The current list:

  • Should the electoral college be abolished, and replaced by a popular vote?
  • Expanding the Federal Judge removal process beyond impeachment to include conviction of a federal offense.
  • A constitutional independent counsel position, perhaps an independent justice department as is common in most states and other countries.
  • Comprehensive immigration reform.
  • Revisit birthright citizenship?
  • Settling the status of the various US territories.
  • Reconciling our mixed legal relationship with Native American nations.
  • Extending the 24th Amendment prohibition on Federal poll taxes to the states, and widening voter suppression protections.
  • Debate and agree upon an expanded list of inalienable rights and privileges that sit above the Constitution and cannot be abridged by law. Among which is a distinct right to privacy of thought and person.
  • Extending Bill of Rights to Corporations.
  • A comprehensive rolling 10 year budget, accruing for necessary long term expenses such as infrastructure repair, pensions and healthcare.
